The concept of energy healing is becoming increasingly mainstream, and chakras have entered everyday vocabulary. But what do these terms actually mean from a shamanic perspective - and how does shamanic energy work differ from other modalities like Reiki or acupuncture?
What Are Chakras?
The chakra system originates from ancient Indian (Hindu and Buddhist) traditions. The word "chakra" is Sanskrit for "wheel" or "disc," and refers to energy centres in the body through which life force energy flows. The traditional system describes seven primary chakras running from the base of the spine to the crown of the head:
- Root chakra (base of spine) - safety, grounding, survival
- Sacral chakra (lower abdomen) - creativity, emotions, pleasure
- Solar plexus chakra (upper abdomen) - personal power, confidence, will
- Heart chakra (centre of chest) - love, compassion, connection
- Throat chakra (throat) - communication, expression, truth
- Third eye chakra (between eyebrows) - intuition, insight, perception
- Crown chakra (top of head) - spiritual connection, higher consciousness
While the chakra system comes from a different tradition to shamanism, many shamanic practitioners - including Ryan at The Heart Shaman - work with these energy centres as part of a broader understanding of the human energy body.
The Shamanic Perspective on Energy
Shamanic traditions worldwide share a fundamental understanding: everything is energy. People, animals, plants, places, stones - all have an energetic dimension. Health and wellbeing depend on energy flowing freely and being in balance.
From a shamanic viewpoint, problems arise when energy becomes:
- Blocked - energy is not flowing freely through the body, leading to stagnation, heaviness, or pain
- Depleted - the energy body is running low, resulting in fatigue, vulnerability, and disconnection
- Intruded upon - energy that does not belong to you has become lodged in your system
- Fragmented - parts of your energy (soul parts) have become disconnected through trauma or shock
How Shamanic Energy Healing Works
A shamanic practitioner addresses energy imbalances by working in an altered state of consciousness, guided by helping spirits. This might involve:
Clearing blockages
The practitioner identifies where energy is stuck or stagnant and works to clear these blockages, restoring natural flow. Clients often describe feeling lighter, more open, or as though something heavy has been lifted.
Restoring depleted energy
Through power animal retrieval, energy infusion, and other techniques, the practitioner works to replenish the energy body. This is particularly relevant for people experiencing burnout or chronic exhaustion.
Removing intrusions
Extraction work identifies and removes energetic intrusions - energies that do not belong in your system. These can manifest as persistent negative thoughts, emotional heaviness, physical discomfort, or patterns that resist change.
Reconnecting fragmented energy
Soul retrieval addresses the most significant form of energy fragmentation - the disconnection of essential soul parts in response to trauma, shock, or overwhelming experience.
The Role of Cacao Ceremonies
Ceremonial cacao - not the same as commercial chocolate - has been used for thousands of years in Mesoamerican traditions as a heart-opening plant medicine. It contains theobromine and other compounds that gently expand the blood vessels, increase circulation, and promote a feeling of openness and warmth.
Ryan incorporates cacao ceremonies into some of his healing work and group events. Cacao is not a psychedelic or hallucinogen - it is a gentle, legal plant medicine that supports the heart chakra and can enhance the depth of healing work.
How Shamanic Energy Work Differs From Other Modalities
Reiki
Reiki channels universal life force energy through specific hand positions. It works primarily through the practitioner acting as a channel. Shamanic energy work involves the practitioner entering altered states of consciousness and working directly with helping spirits. Both are valid approaches. Ryan is trained in both Reiki and shamanic healing and draws on whichever approach best serves the individual client.
Acupuncture
Acupuncture works with the meridian system from Traditional Chinese Medicine, using needles at specific points to influence energy flow. Shamanic healing works with a different energetic framework and uses spiritual rather than physical tools. The two can complement each other well.
Crystal healing
Crystal healing works with the vibrational properties of stones and minerals. While some shamanic practitioners incorporate crystals, shamanic healing is fundamentally about the practitioner's relationship with helping spirits rather than the properties of physical objects.
Getting Started With Energy Healing
If you are experiencing persistent fatigue, emotional heaviness, or a sense that your energy is "off," shamanic energy healing may be worth exploring. Ryan offers one-to-one sessions both in person in Birmingham and online via Zoom.
